Fatal shootings of artisanal miners in Mogovolas demand an independent and transparent investigation

The killing by gunfire of several individuals in the mining area of Marraca, Iuluti community, Mogovolas District, Nampula Province, on 29 December, constitutes a serious incident that raises grave human rights concerns and requires urgent clarification by the Mozambican authorities. The incident occurred in a context of heightened tension linked to mining activities in the area. However, no context–whether related to illegal mining, public order operations, or security enforcement–can justify the loss of life without due process.
