It is with deep sorrow and indignation that I confirm the news of the shooting of our national mobilizer, Joel Amaral, affectionately known as MC Trufafa. Our beloved Joel was brutally attacked, sustaining three gunshot wounds— two to his lower limbs and one to the head. At the time of the incident, he was in the Cualane 2º neighborhood, in the city of Quelimane, Zambézia Province.
There is no doubt that this cowardly act is a clear example of the political intolerance that pervades our country. How can we speak of national unity while Mozambique reeks of gunpowder? It is unacceptable that violence and persecution have become part of the reality for any Mozambican — especially those who devote themselves to promoting peace, equality, and justice in our society.
The persecution of our members, or any citizen exercising their right to free expression, must stop. It is time to unite against violence and oppression, and to demand a Mozambique where everyone can live in safety and dignity. The fight for justice and peace is a responsibility we all share, and we cannot allow fear and intolerance to prevail.
In this difficult moment, we send our prayers and full support to Joel Amaral’s family, wishing him a swift and full recovery. May this tragic episode serve as a call to action for all Mozambicans, so that together, we may build a more just and peaceful future for our nation.
Venâncio Mondlane.
