Mozambican activist and Executive Secretary of the Women’s Observatory, Quitéria Guirengane, was honored in the book “She Stands for Peace”, launched by the African Union Commission (AU) and the United Nations Office to the African Union (UNOAU), during the High Level Commemoration of the 25th anniversary of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325, held between October 16 and 18, 2025, in Windhoek, Namibia..

Guirengane was one of five African women chosen to speak at the launch of the book, on a panel moderated by Liberata Mulamula, the African Union’s Special Envoy for Women, Peace and Security. The event was witnessed by renowned figures from the continent, such as Sahle-Work Zewde (former President of Ethiopia), Catherine Samba-Panza (former President of the Central African Republic), Ellen Johnson Sirleaf (former President of Liberia) and Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka (former Vice-President of South Africa).

The tribute recognizes the fundamental role of African women in conflict prevention and resolution, mediation and post-conflict reconstruction, highlighting female leadership and courage in contexts of adversity.

During her speech, Quitéria Guirengane said that “in Mozambique, fighting for peace is not a choice, it is survival. Women transform pain into purpose and demand reconciliation and reparation so that peace ceases to be a promise and becomes a reality”. She also stressed that “peace cannot be a mere declaration – it is a daily struggle that demands solidarity, justice and inclusion”.

“She Stands for Peace” will also be launched on October 25 in New York, during the international celebration of the 25th anniversary of Resolution 1325, reaffirming the global commitment to women’s leadership in promoting peace.

On the sidelines of the event, Quitéria Guirengane also participated in the High-Level Political Dialogue “Honoring the Legacy, Advancing the Women, Peace and Security Agenda” and in the Information Sharing Session of the Great Lakes Regional Forum, held on October 18.

These sessions, promoted by the AU, UN Women, OSESG-GL and GIZ, brought together African women leaders with the aim of strengthening cooperation and increasing women’s influence in peace and security processes in the region.
