The city of Moatize, located in the Province of Tete, central Mozambique, has been an important region for the exploration of mineral resources, es- pecially coal. In recent years, the presence of large mining companies, such as the Brazilian “ Vale Moçambique SA”, which in 2022 sold 1its assets in the coal exploration project in the Moatize mines to the Indian company “Vulcan Mozambique”, brought promises of development and prosperity for the region. However, this promise has been accompanied by growing concern about the environmental and public health impacts resulting from these activities. Residents of the neighbor- hoods 25 de Setembro, Bagamoio, Chithatha, 1. ° de Maio, Nhantchere, Liberdade, Malàbué and Chipanga, among others, have expressed their discontent and concern about the large-scale pollution that affects their daily lives.
