There have been 10 years of investigation carried out by our team since 2015 into the contours of the adventures of Ernesto Valoi “Boss Navara”, one of the biggest poachers in Mozambique, sentenced to 27 years in prison and a 16-year fine and 11 million in compensation to the State, and loss of assets worth 9 million and favor of the State.
After three successive postponements, the judge sentenced last Friday, August 16, 2024, the defendants Ernesto Valoi “Boss Navara” and Paulo Zucula Júnior are responsible for criminal association, use of prohibited weapons, money laundering, exposing people to danger, use of false documents, financing terrorism, crimes of selling or purchasing an illegal weapon, crimes of selling and purchasing illegal cars, poaching and illicit sale of faunal resources and prohibited species, homicides, some crimes committed in neighboring Africa South.
The trial of the “Navara Case” began on December 26, 2023.Another of his accomplices from Navara Paulo Zucula Júnior was sentenced to 24 years in prison and a 16-year fine, 4 million in compensation in favor of the State and loss of assets worth 17 million in favor of the State.The list of crimes listed includes the purchase and sale of prohibited species (16 years in prison), criminal association (8 years in prison), money laundering (16 years in prison)From “Boss Navara” Ruined castlesDuring a visit to Massingir in 2017, it became apparent that Navara and other poaching kingpins had built mansions with profits from selling rhino horns to Chinese and Vietnamese buyers over the past two decades.
