Moz24h journalist Quinton Nicuete has once again been summoned by the National Criminal Investigation Service (SERNIC) and is required to appear on 20 July at 9:00 a.m. in the city of Pemba as part of an ongoing case reportedly involving alleged defamation brought by a foreign national.
The new summons comes amid growing concern over press freedom in Mozambique. Recently, Moz24h editor and investigative journalist Estácio Valoi had his computers and mobile phones seized under an order issued by the Judicial Court of Pemba City. The move drew criticism from national and international organizations, as well as media professionals, over its implications for journalistic confidentiality and the protection of sources.
The two cases come at a time when MISA Mozambique has warned of an increase in incidents of intimidation, threats, and harassment against journalists. The organization argues that impunity has contributed to the recurrence of such practices, putting press freedom and the public’s right to information at risk. Representatives of the European Union have also expressed concern about the safety of journalists and reiterated the importance of ensuring a free and secure environment for the practice of journalism.
