SERNIC’S VERDICT ON THE DEATH OF TETE’S PRESIDING JUDGE

Did Justo Mulémbwè dismiss his aide-de-camp, consume excessive alcohol, go to his vehicle to rest, and die from lack of oxygen?

Days after the death of Justo Mulémbwè, Presiding Judge of the Judicial Court of Tete Province, which occurred on 31 January, the National Criminal Investigation Service (SERNIC) publicly clarified the cause of death. At a press conference held on 4 February, SERNIC’s spokesperson in Tete, Celina Roque, stated that the death resulted from asphyxiation.

Initially described by the authorities as a death under unusual circumstances, the case has now received an official position. According to SERNIC, the investigation concluded that Justo Mulémbwè died because, after excessive consumption of alcoholic beverages, he locked himself inside his vehicle and, due to lack of oxygen, lost vital signs.

The information that the victim died from asphyxiation introduces a new and serious element in the assessment of this case. By its very nature, such a cause of death requires particularly rigorous clarification regarding the concrete circumstances in which it occurred, any possible third-party involvement, and the factual sequence that led to the fatal outcome—especially what may have happened during the period of alcohol consumption.
