Journalist Carlitos Cadangue attacked by individuals wearing PRM uniforms

The journalist and correspondent of the Soico Group in Manica Province, Carlitos Cadangue, was the target of an attack on the night of Wednesday, 4 February, when unknown individuals fired several shots at his vehicle.

According to the journalist’s own account, the attackers were travelling in a Ford Ranger and were wearing uniforms of the Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM)—a particularly serious fact that raises grave concerns regarding the possible involvement or instrumentalization of State agents in acts of intimidation and violence against journalists.

Carlitos Cadangue has distinguished himself through his coverage of sensitive issues in Manica Province, with a particular focus on gold mining and its environmental and social impacts. He has closely followed cases that led to the suspension of mining activities and their subsequent resumption under opaque circumstances, reinforcing suspicions that the attack is directly linked to the exercise of free and independent journalism.
