FACEBOOK

At least nine people have died as a result of the heavy rains affecting southern Mozambique. Since the start of the rainy season in October 2025, at least 104 people have lost their lives across the country.

According to a bulletin from the National Institute for Disaster Risk Management (INGD), covering the period from 21 December 2025 to 13 January 2026, a copy of which was accessed by the Centre for Democracy and Human Rights (CDD), rainfall since October has caused flooding, urban inundation, and erosion, resulting in 103 deaths. Of these, eight occurred in the southern region following intense rainfall recorded since Friday, 9 January.

However, a report published by the newspaper Domingo in its 18 January edition confirmed the death of one person in Manhiça District due to flooding, raising the death toll to nine in the south and 104 nationwide.
